If we aks what a curriculum should do or bein order to provide the greatest social awareness and adaptability for thestudent, we are opening a discussion on the technology of education. Butsuppose we as k instead, “Should acurriculum provide social awareness and adaptability?
Are these good aims?Further, If they are good aims, are they proper curricular targetsor do they belong elsewhere?” These questions will soon require us to thinkabout education philosophically. Very shortly we will be led to questions abouthuman nature, the social order, the physical world, the ways of knowing, therelation between knowledge and action, and so on. A risk attaches to each of the twotendencies: technologists may plunge in, thoughtlessly, to gain somepreconceived concrete end in the educational system, only to find that theyhave successfully accomplished a result which had not been carefully thoughtout in advance, philosophers of educations filled with glitteringgeneralities and endless debate, but with no concrete suggestions for gettingthe ideal job done. Neither approach, in short, can get very far without takingsome counsel from the other. It is the considered opinion of the authorsof this book that the present era is one of highly efficient technology, including the imminent prospect of machine technology in education (automaticaudio-visual devices, educational television, teaching machines, etc), but thatthere may be a corresponding proverty in our capacity to ask the tough basicquestions. We can either ask answer these queistions or pretend they aren’tthere.
But if we pretend they aren’t there, they will rise again to haunt us,when some educational disaster becomes sufficiently apparent. If fundamentalnotions about man, thought, nature, human nature, and so on, are strangers tous, we can only settle our differences by political force, economic pressure,or irrational persuasion. Education, then, does not receive reasonabletreatment when intellect has been allowed to doze, unconcerned with basicissues; yet at the same time the educational system is exhorted to bring forthreasonable and responsible citizents.
None of our pressing problems can be solvedswiftly or by the rehearsal of persistent platitudes. Inescapably, thedisputant, if they continue to think, rather than merely to react, will findthemselves discussing very basic questions.
We do not have to take dramaticexamples. Try asking yourself about the worth, meaning, and place of new methods of studying mathematics versus old ones, and you will soon find that you musttalk about the relation between man and nature, and that you cannot avoid atheory of knowledge. Being challenged by the root problems in education is notan affliction confined to the professional teacher. If you are simply an honestcitizen, can you make a serious statement about the need for more discipline inthe schools without stopping tto ask what on earth discipline means, what sortof social institution the school is, or why you are getting so excited aboutit?
Of course you can; but does what you have said show the kind of maturitythat you want our schools to develop in the new generation? Have you thought,at all, what assumptions you have made about the nature of young human beings;about the nature of the world they live in; about what things are important topass on, and what attic trunks of heritage it may be good for our successors tojettison? If you have, you are already aware that to be intelligentlyinterested in education is, necessarily, to be something of a philosopher; ifyou have not, stay with us for a time and see what some men who thought deeplyon these matters have to say.
Philosophies of education usually can besummarized in formulas. The formulas become slogans, and the slogans are thenministerpreted, having been taken out of context, without suitable study. Afinal stage of deterioration comes when educational malpractice is supported byappeal to these compact slogan summaries. Here are some typical educationalcatchphrases which were intended to summarizev – not to be substituted for –sustained reflection on educational philosophy: “All knowledge isrecollection”, “Man is a rational animal”, All education is rhythmic”,“Education must teach us to live close to nature”, “We learn by doing”. Whatthings have been done under these banners!
These ideas, and others like them, are reconsidered in the present book, in terms of the comprehensive philosophiesto which they belong. Our aim is to infuse life into the dead images of liveideas. The ideas are alive, awaiting use anew by each new teacher.
But theimages are only pictures on the mantel, occasionally noticed and dusted.(SELESAI). One point must be clear: A philosophy ofeducation is different from a “position” Generally a position is a body ofdectrine, more or less coherently drawn up. It is something like a partyplatform in politicc: “We believe” etc. One reason why positions are bad is thatthey too often provide us with only emotional reasons for accepting them, rather than thoughtful reasons for considering them. The more penetrating aphilosopher’s insights in education, the more devoted are his followers.
Hestirs them by revealing things that were formerly unseen, and they somewhatdeliriously accept all that he says, often not asking for reasons, even wherereasons are given. It is much easier to follow a leader than it is so work withan idea.
The “positions” created by apostleship often come into conflictwith one another, and in the warfare between the old and the new much is lost.Dewey, for example, for all this criticism of Plato, is in many ways muchcloser to Plato than he is to the votaries of “progressive education” Yet mostof Dewey’s supporters and all of his detractors are unaware that this is so.They are hypnotized by the sound of jurnalists repeating one another. Trus thebattle comes to be fought out in adult picture and news magizines as to whetheror not “Dewey’s founding of the progressive movement has been of benefit toAmerican education.” Dewey didn’t found the movement, was often critical of it,and several times laid it out by the heels. He had a sympathy for certainaspects of progressive education, nothing more. But the public has other ideas, and alas, so does much of the teaching profession. In the eighteenth century the Enlightenmentreached a highwater mark.
The use of reason to understand the general laws ofphysical nature seemed to have achieved a clarity and precision which defiedimprovement. As a result, we find both Rousseau and Kant accepting a view ofphysical reality, conjectured by the scientific intelligence of the time, whichis very different from the physical view of the world in the age of Platoand Aristotle. Their central concern is with the individual human being and hisfreedom. How can we explain, and how preserve, an inner personal dignity whichseems a strange exceptionn to the rest of merely mechanical nature, as natureis understood by science and molded by society?
Rousseau is, like Plato, apoet, an introspective psychologist; he has an unerring intuition of thedangers that social artificiality pose to authentic selfhood. Rousseau opposesthought with feeling, passinately proclaiming the ideal of the free man as theaim of education. Kant, with the same aim in mind, gives us instead a carefullythought-out critique of the limits of scientific understanding, showing why wemust always find complete determinism in the world of space and time, butfreedom in our moral lives. Here there is an extraordinary diversity ofapproach to a common problem within a period: Rousseau writes, we will show, anovel of education in his Emile; Kant, on the other hand, provides a didacticand wholly objective theory of pedagogy in his lectures on education.
In the contemporary world, these is anattempt to bring together the vividness and romance that were part of the Greekview of reality and the precision that seventeenth-century science had attainedin its analysis of nature as matter in motion. Changes in science itsefl showedthat the clarity of the seventeenth-century view had been bought at the priceof incompleteness, the great theories of evolution and relativity are basedupon discoveries which forced scientists to accept an intimate interdependenceof space and time, and a one-directional development of life through time.Dewey and Whitehead talk about process, where Plato and Aristotle wereconcerned with subtance and form, Rousseau and Kant with freedom andmechanistic necessity. Yet between Whitehead and Dewey the same difference(within a common historical emphasis) appears that distinguished Rousseau andKant, Plato and Aristotle, in earlier stages of the evolution of philosophy.Dewey is the New England boy brought up to appreciate the value of “gumption”in making a paying proposition out of a Vermont farm, through hard work, analert mind, and a strong commitment to one’s neighbors. Whitehead is more theCambridge graduate, a prizer of civilizations, of the cultivated mind, and ofcreative genius.

Both men are aware of the tight interconnectedness of thingsthat once seemed separate; both are sensitive to the need for adaptingunchanging forms to a time-immersed world where “all things flow.” For neitherman is nature a giant intricate clock, for all her regularity. Rather, natureis the context of life itself, and cannot be considered apart from life, whichshe brings forth and nourishes. But where Dewey is constantly aware of thehuman need for other people to talk with, the need of practical application toshow that ideas mean and what they are worth, Whitehead is more sensitive tothe silence and solitude that surround each individual being within the flow oftime. For him the great problem of formal education is to prepare theindividual for the unending taks of self-education, through which alone a man’screative capacities can be released. Dewey is certai that a divorce of theoryfrom practice is sterile, Whitehead insistent that a divorce of abstractintelligence from feeling is fetal to both.
If we did not see them againts thebackground of two millennia of history, the two men might seem to us atopposite poles; yet both are typical of our own century in what they thinkimportant, what they value, and what they presuppose about science, psychology, and society. The great movements of ideas through historycan be charted in many ways. We must think of their growth as a sequence ofinsight, critical contradiction, and reconciliattion. The fact that we stillsahre Plato’s vision of that education ideally ought to be, and still arethinking through his problem of how to bring the actual closer to the ideal, shows that there would be a loss of vision and understanding if we tried totreat the idea of education statically, as a snapshot might freeze it in apassing moment. Ideas must tack and tack again to meet the changing winds oftime and human ingenuity. If we judge their course by the windward or theleeward tack, they seem to sail in inconstant, even opposite, directions, it isonly through time that it becomes clear that their shifts and changes of courseare guided by a fixed ideal: the self-betterment of man.
